Tim Cahill dedicated his winning goal in Everton’s 2-1 win against BATE Borisov to the victims of the Samoa tsunami.
The Australian midfielder’s mother was born in one of the villages which was damaged on the island. Cahill travels to Samoa every year to see his family and is hoping to do something to those who have been affected.
“It’s been an emotional last three days,” he told evertonTV. “I have been speaking to a lot of family back in Samoa. There’s about 140 dead already and there’s still people to be found.”
“Hard hit is the village where all my family is from and I’m a very emotional person, my family is very important to me,” he continued. “I can’t put into words what went through my head. I go to the country every year and I spend a lot of time there.
“I try to help the kids there, I try to be a good role model and do as much a I can. They are all obviously in my thoughts and in my prayers and I hope to try to do something to help those who are suffering.”
