The rumour mill keeps on rolling

The summer transfer window can be explained as overhyped, with fans getting their hopes up over big-name signings and being misled by the media, who are more concerned about filling the columns on their paper on a quiet day.

While the likes of Manchester City seem to be signing every forward who has ever put on a pair of football boots, the transfer desk at Everton has been considerably less quiet.

We all know that City have money to spend as if it’s going out of fashion, but should we be more thankful that the likes of Joleon Lescott and Mikkel Arteta are still in the blue of Everton?  There is no doubting that David Moyes has done a fantastic job at building the squad he has at Goodison Park on what can be described as a shoe-string budget compared to a lot of our Premiership counterparts.

Speculation suggests that Mark Hughes is still considering a £15million offer for Lescott, if he can’t eventually twist John Terry’s arm to move north, but let’s face it – if Terry is valued at £35million-plus, surely a £15million offer for arguably the best young defender in the country is an insult.

So far, we’ve brought in Jo on a loan deal, who showed us towards the end of last season what he can do.  Moyes has also signed 16-year-old Luke Garbutt from Leeds, who is rated as ‘one for the future’, along with Anton Peterlin from Ventura County Fusion.

Out of the exit have gone Lars Jacobsen, Nuno Valente and Andy van der Meyde which will go some way to freeing up funds for wages.

The latest rumours surrounding Sheffield United full-back Kyle Naughton are suggesting that Spurs have agreed a deal, but the 20-year-old wants to move to Everton.  It will be interesting to see how that one develops.

One thing is for sure, the rumour mill will keep rolling and we’ll just have to ride it out.
